People are weird about their cars. Some folks are as protective over them as they would be a newborn child. Others see their car as the simplest way from point A to point B, and they could care less if you spill a milkshake in the backseat. It wouldn't be the first time. But no matter what, you still have to be respectful. Especially if you want to drive their car, or borrow it one day. Driving is one of the most hazardous things we do on a daily basis. There are infinite possibilities for things to go wrong, infinite ways the car could get damaged, and infinite ways you can jeopardize yourself or your fellow commuters' safety. The slip of the wheel and nothing is ever the same.
That's why asking to drive someone's car can be a social quagmire. People love to be helpful and neighborly, but that can only go so far. Like in this story where a coworker overstepped his bounds.
